BISON

In December 2025, the American Indian Center in Chicago brought 6 Bison to love on the prairie in Kane County.

This is the first time in 200 years that Bison have grazed on an Illinois prairie.

When Bison originally existed in Illinois it was almost entirely native prairie grasses.

Now, less than one-tenth of one percent of the prairie remains.

These Bison, 3 males and 3 females, selected for breeding. are hoped to produce calves.

They are living on 38 acres of prairie at the Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve at 13N240 Engle Rd Sycamore

and will be available for viewing starting in May 2026.

Depending on the location of the herd, you could be as close as 10 feet of these animals.

Or they could be in a location where you would need binoculars.

If an animal approaches the electric fence, it's a signal that you are too close

and you are making the animal(s) uncomfortable.

Bison can also be seen at on the grasses at Fermilab in Batavia and at the Lords Park zoo in Elgin.
