Another recommendation is to take in a play at Gammage Auditorium on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. This venue is typically the first stop on touring companies on their way East. Although Phoenix is sometimes described as 'Chicago in a desert',

Tucson has retained much of its western and Spanish heritage.

However, earlier there was pressure to make Tucson 'American'., not Spanish.
