Fred Harvey and Harvey Girls

Restaurant and Hotel Baron Fred Harvey is considered by many to have

 "McDonaldized" western dining.

He is also credited with introducing the "Harvey Girls" who would

become very famous.

As a perfectionist, Fred Harvey frequently visited his dining and

hotel establishments along the Santa Fe.

Not only did Harvey serve great food and coffee, but they also had

the best customer service thanks to the Harvey Girls.

He suffered from stress and was told by his doctor to destress by vacationing

in England as much as possible.

Not surprisingly, he didn't want to retire. It wasn't until the Santa Fe president

said "retire or the Santa Fe won't renew the contract".

Fred Harvey's son, Ford,  took over and further opened up the Southwest

including the Grand Canyon.

Fred instructed his employees that when he died not to tell anyone for 10 years!
