How are La Fox Metra Passengers Dealing
with Track Anxiety in La Fox?

Reasons to Board Metra in Geneva

Posted November 16, 2025

Numerous Mill Creek & Campton Hills residents wish to alert Metra passengers to be aware of safety and boarding issues at the La Fox Station.
Many passengers are uncertain as to where to board Chicago bound trains as trains can arrive on Platform 1 or Platform 2.
Metra signage indicates trains arriving after 7:59am will arrive on Platform 1. This signage is wrong. Afternoon trains do arrive on either Platform 1 or Platform 2.
Metra signage also indicates an announcement will be made if train comes in on Platform 2. Typically, there is no announcement indicating arrival platform.
When train arrives on opposite platform, passengers have & 1/2 minutes to walk briskly to the opposite platform.
Passengers with luggage and disabilities have to navigate 6 ramps, numerous steps and long tunnel. Hurrying passengers risk falling. One passenger fell and broke his leg. Several others have missed their train.
Trains typically do not wait for passengers who are not on the platform.
Passengers now stand on either Platform 1 or 2, look West down the tracks three minutes before train arrival. Fortunately, the train headlight clearly indicates which platform the train will arrive.
Consider boarding at Geneva Station to avoid, steps, ramps, tunnels, and ‘track anxiety’. There is inside seating and washroom facilities. There is free daily parking just steps from the station available after 8:30am on weekdays with no restrictions on weekends.
Furthermore, a Metra customer service attendant is on premise from 5am to 9pm on weekdays available for ticketing and boarding information.
In October 2025, Metra extended Geneva station hours to 9pm on weekdays. Previously, the station closed at 1pm. Please note that the Geneva station is closed on weekends.
Metra is concerned for passenger safety and does listen.

La Fox Station Updates

New La Fox Road
Proposed North Parking Lot
Fencing between Track 2 & 3

Posted November 16, 2025
At the recent Metra public meeting held at the Kane County Gov’t building in early November 2025, I learned that Metra owns a junk of land just north of the LaFox train station purposed for a parking lot. Metra is anticipating that Shodeen will be successful in creating a massive residential complex in that area.
A new La Fox Road is almost complete from Keslinger Rd going north under the tracks. At some point the current LaFox Rd is slated to close.
Recently I quizzed a UP Supervisor who said he didn’t know if UP would re design to make it a pedestrian crossing. The La Fox post office is immediately south of the tracks. There are a few homes and a business on the north side of the tracks. I have seen people from the business cross the tracks.
About two months ago, I alerted Metra to the lack of fencing between track 2 and track 3 at La Fox. They emailed me that my observation was being sent to UP.
Then three weeks ago I talked to another UP Supervisor working near the La Fox station and pointed out that I have seen passengers walk across the tracks between platforms instead of using the stairs and tunnel.
He was aware of the lack of fencing and immediately texted the maintenance to schedule to reinstall the fence. The fence was installed within 2 weeks. The fence had been taken down for tie replacement and never put back up. According to one passenger that tie replacement happened several years ago!
On Friday November 14 I talked to a UP maintenance worker at the La Fox station installing light bulbs in the tunnel.
From our conversation, I am still unclear as to who owns what and who maintains pertaining to the La Fox Station and the Geneva Station.
He did share that he fixed the heater at Geneva's north shelter. He also said that Geneva now owns and has maintenance responsibility for the two south shelters. I hope to confirm that soon.
He further pointed out that the UP/Metra divorce has caused many issues, some still unresolved.
As he was a friendly guy, after thanking him for the information and after learning about his maintenance at Geneva’s north shelter, I presented my vision for turning the Geneva’s north shelter into a Rail Viewing area.
His reaction was positive and said he would pass the idea along to “Bridges and Stations”.
Knowing how slow UP moves, I am not optimistic for follow through any time soon. However, he essentially confirmed the shelter is on UP property and not on Metras or Shodeen.
Earlier this year, the City of Geneva provided me a map that shows who owns what around the Geneva station. The land around the shelter did not show the UP name, but showed another railroad name that I didn’t recognize.
Completing this puzzle continues ….

Metra Train Waits for Late Passenger

Friday afternoon while at the La Fox station, I saw a woman park her car and run toward the south stairs to access Platform 2 . Obviously, this is where she normally waits for the train. I saw her as I normally watch for passengers from the south platform to inform them if I know what platform the train is coming in on. Since she was looking to climb the south stairs and the train was 1 block from the station, I yelled at her to to don’t take the stairs and run through the tunnel While she was in the tunnel, the train came into the station. I got the engineers attention to let him know there was a passenger in the tunnel. He gave me a thumbs up and waited for the lady to get to the platform where she successfully boarded the train. Recently, I learned Metra owns land north of the La Fox Station tracks purposed for a parking lot in anticipation of Shodeen’s massive residential development nearby.

Track Anxiety at the La Fox Station

ADA passengers and elderly may want to board in Geneva
Several Mill Creek & Campton Hills Metra passengers are alerting riders to confusing boarding issues at the La Fox Station. Many passengers are uncertain as to where to board Chicago bound trains.
Some have missed trains, others have had to hustle to get to the boarding platform. Passengers with luggage have to take ramps and steps risking falling as well as missing trains.
Chicago bound trains can arrive on Platform 1 or Platform 2. This happens mostly in the afternoons.
Too frequently, passengers find themselves on the wrong platform. Train signage has not been updated for several years.
Recommendation: If PA does not indicate arrival platform #, look West down the tracksthree minutes before train arrival, train headlight clearly indicates platform arrival #. If needed, passengers have 1 1/2 minutes to change platforms.
Additionally, ADA and elderly passengers may want to consider boarding in Geneva: There are no ramps, no stairs, and no tunnels. There is free daily parking after 8:30am & weekends steps away from the station.
Furthermore, a Metra customer service attendant is available to help with ticketing, information, and boarding from 5am to 9pm on weekdays.
