Metra's Achilles Heel at Geneva Station

During Union Pacific’s 3rd rail construction through Geneva and its frequent freight traffic, more inbound to Chicago commuter trains arrive on the south track 3 platform.
Early in 2025, UP and Metra addressed numerous safety issues involving commuters. However, one major safety issue remains.
When the Chicago bound train comes in on the south track 3 platform, passengers arriving at the station about 1 minutes before the scheduled arrival, find themselves facing a major safety decision.
As the late arriving passengers are running down the north platform to the 3rd street crossing, they see the downed gates.
Do they go under the downed gate?
Do they wait for the gates to go up after the train stops and loads passengers?
Metra personnel (and others) see too many passengers choosing to go under the gates!!!
This is the ‘achilles heel’.
As of early October 2025, the Geneva station is now open from 5am to 9pm on weekdays and staffed by Metra personnel.
Thus, passengers who arrive 5 minutes or earlier before the scheduled arrival are directed by the a Metra attendant to Platform 2 Track 3 if needed. These passengers successfully get to Platform 2 before the 3rd street crossing gates go down.
Since the station is not open on weekends, there is no Metra attendant to direct passengers to Platform 2 if needed.
Starting 7 minutes before the train is scheduled arrive, the PA and monitor announces if the train will come in on Platform 2.
Late arriving passengers, even if they see passengers on Platform 2, don’t have time to from platform 1 to platform 2 before the train comes.
Several railroad veterans have suggested an answer:
If engineers were to stop at least 50 feet before the 3rd Street crossing, after 15 seconds,. the downed gates would go up,
unless another train is coming, thus allowing passengers to safely cross the tracks to board their train.
Currently, observers state that most trains stop within a few feet or in the middle of the 3rd Street Crossing. Thus, the downed gates do not go up.
As there has been no consistency, Metra personnel can only address those waiting at the downed gates by saying, “hopefully, the train will stop short allowing the gates to go up. But there is no guarantee it”.
This situation puts the Metra attendant in a difficult situation to say the least.

To Greg Godfrey TRACC Director

This is to call your attention to the exemplary service by Metra Geneva Station employee Maria Gutierrez.
Being a frequent observer at the Geneva station, i witnessed Maria’s positive and professional interactions with passengers.
On several occasions, I saw Maria providing helpful information to Metra and non Metra passengers alike.
On one occasion, she successfully dealt with a potentially disruptive individual.
Lastly,, after being ‘bumped’, she welcomed her replacement in a most friendly manner. Furthermore, Maria trained her in a most professional manner, not displaying any resentment.
Maria will be missed at the Geneva station.
Sincerely,
DG 'Rusty' Alderson
Rusty's Public Comment at

With TRACC Director in attendance, I thanked him for not only extending Geneva station unti 9pm but also to provide a Metra Customer Care attendant at the Station from 5am to 9pm on weekends.

I asked him to do what he can do to open the Geneva station on weekends.
September 18 2025
THANK YOU METRA!!!
Metra informs that Geneva Station hours will be extended during the week.

100 Hundred Passengers Miss Train at Geneva
100 Passengers Miss Train!
On July 31, 2025, an inbound to Chicago came in on at the Geneva station on Track 3 (the wrong track)..
Two long freight trains on Track 1 and Track 2 came in at the same time the Chicago bound commuter train was arriving on Platform 2 (Track 3).
The passing freight trains blocked passengers on Platform 1 from crossing tracks to reach Platform 2 to board train.

The commuter train did not wait until the freight trains passed.

When UP activated their 3rd track through Geneva on Tuesday 9pm July 15 202, I observed afternoon trains on these dates.
July 16 - July 19
July 21 - July 24
July 28 - July 31
All trains arrived on Platform 1 except one train. There was a maintenance truck on Track 1
After the 3rd track was activated, I and others were expecting inbound trains would consistently arrive
and board on Track 1/Platform 1.
And that was happening …
… until Wednesday July 30 and Thursday July 31.
I observed on Wednesday July 30 2:37 train
… passengers waiting on Platform 1 heard PA announcement: train coming in 7 minutes (no track or platform # mentioned),
then 2 minutes before scheduled arrival, PA board on Track 3/Platform 2
Passengers crossed tracks to Platform 2
Then Westbound Freight train passes on Track 3!!
After freight train passed
Passengers hear PA announce - train arriving on Platform 1!
As Passengers started to walk to Platform 1,
inbound commuter train activated gates
preventing passengers from crossing Platform 1
Passengers wait behind gates
Commuter train stops 50 ft before street crossing
There was a UP maintenance truck on track 1 100 ft east of the tracks
that prevented the gates from going up even thought
commuter trains had been stationary for over 15 seconds)
Finally, the gates go up
Passengers standing behind gates crossed tracks
(there were no other trains passing)
Everyone boarded the train safely.
Fortunately, the cab car had stopped …not at the crossing where it usually stops…but 50 feet before the street crossing …
Wednesday July 30 2:37 inbouond train arrives on Track 3
Thursday July 31 All afternoon inbound trains arrived on Platform 1
Afternoon: An outbound afternoon train to Elburn came in on Track 1 with no PA announcement.
Person on Platform 1 noticed outbound coming in on Track 1 and told the waiting passenger.
The passenger was able to cross the tracks before the gates went down.

Rail Fans Geneva Chapter believes it is time for changes at Geneva's Metra Station
Rail Fan #1 Recommendations
Post appropriate signage pertaining to train arrival
on Platform 1 and Platform 2
Provide signage stating track arrival is announced over
loudspeaker and put on monitor about 7 minutes before
scheduled train arrival. Be present at this time to make
way to Platform 2 if needed
Provide appropriate signage regarding arrival platform
to passengers waiting in parking lot
Create a station and surrounding area pleasing and inviting
Provide a shelter within 20 feet of main station
Keep station and shelters open 5:00am to 6pm 7 days a week
Provide outdoor seating within 5 feet of station
 Institute an ‘Ambassador' program
These volunteers would help new and occasional passengers,
help reduce track anxiety, and address a safety issue informing
late arriving passengers to quickly walk to Platform 2 if needed
Create Rail Fan Viewing Area at current shelter on Platform 1
on weekends as Metra’s thank you to Geneva
Geneva Train Alerts
Inbound to Chicago trains sometimes arrive on Platform 2 (south platform)

Come early for announcement

Reduce Track Anxiety
During March 2025, one out of every four trains arrived on Platform 2

Listen for these track arrival announcements 7 minutes before scheduled train arrival
1. “train arriving in ____ minutes” indicates train will arrive on Platform 1
Note: the announcement will not say “Platform 1”

or
2. “train # _____ scheduled to arrive OTC at _____, train will board on Platform 2;
IMMEDIATELY cross tracks at 3rd Street to access Platform 2
Note: train gates descend when train passes Western Ave. (about 1/2 mile west of station)
Limited Shelter Options
Platform 1 Main station open weekdays from 5am to 1pm. Closed on weekends
Platform 1 3rd Street Station Bar & Grill (must make a purchase)
Platform 2 Enclosed shelters on Platform 2 close at 2:45pm
Metra Tracker
If you use Metra tracker, know it does not indicate if the train will arrive on Platform 2.
Being a train enthusiast and Metra rider, I am concerned with
passenger experiences at
Geneva's Metra Station.

In December 2024, I noticed more inbound trains arriving on Platform 2.
There were no regular announcements over the loudspeaker.

I saw people missing trains.
I saw people going under gates.
I learned of many people missing trains.

When passengers continually went under downed gates and when I observed two adults racing freight trains to get from
Platform 1 to Platform 2,
I called Metra.

The following sections contain
my observations and
letters to Metra
regarding
safety issues at the
Geneva station

I called Metra customer service early last week and was told I would be receiving a return call within 5 -7 business days.
My observations after being present for 50 afternoon weekday trains in February and March:
Track Arrival
One out of four trains came in on the South Track
Timely announcements were being made telling passengers to board on Platform 2 (also announcements appeared on the monitor)
November/December 2024 Comparison to Last Fall
More people were arriving early (10 min) compared to last year perhaps suggesting they are aware of the situation
Fewer passengers were going under gates - these passengers are those who came prior to 5 minutes expecting to board on the North tracks only to see the train coming on South track
Track Anxiety
As passengers arrive at the station, I share about the train loading situation. When I kiddingly mention “Geneva’s Newest Disease - Track Anxiety”, I am told it is very “real” .
Signage
There are no new signs.
Shelters
The main station hours continue to be 5am to 1pm. The two shelters on the South Track were open in November and December. When I returned in February, the shelters were locked.
In early March I observed Anderson Lock Company installing what appeared to be time locks. Subsequently, I have determined the shelters are open at 1:00pm when I arrive and lock automatically at 2:45. I don’t know what time they open in the morning although I had been told by a UP employee they open at 5am.
South Shelter Ownership: After another call to Metra last week, I was told the Geneva Police controlled the shelter. I didn’t argue. I called the Geneva Police and ended up talking to the Parking officer.
He told me the shelters were open all day (I knew this was false, but didn’t argue). I then went to City Hall asking if there was a City Hall employee who was a liaison with Metra. Several days later
I was given the name of the #2 person in Public Works. He informed me that Metra does own the two shelters. However, he confided that Metra has kept their ownership ‘quiet’.
This is a DRAFT of a “Wish List” I am contemplating sending to Metra:
1. Open the Geneva Station from 5am to 8pm
Current hours: 5am to 1pm
Note: When encountering inclement weather, there is no shelter for passengers. Furthermore, passengers have no protection from the sun.
2. Post Station hours both on front and back doors to station
Current: No hours are posted on the front and back (platform side) doors
3. Provide enclosed warming shelter on Platform 1 (North track) within 20 feet of Station
Current: Warming shelter on Platform is not enclosed and is located 1/2 block from the station and is seldom used.
4. Provide Commuter Alert signage to state: Inbound to Chicago trains may come in on either track. Listen for announcement on track arrival provided 7 minutes before scheduled arrival.
Current: There is no signage indicating trains may come in on either platform.
5. Provide signage facing private parking lot …passengers wait in these cars for train but, in cold and inclement weather have their car windows rolled up and may not hear any announcement or view the monitor
Current: there is no signage
6. Signage on Platform 1 states “Platform 1”
Current: Signage on Platform 1 only indicates “to Chicago”; it does not state “Platform 1”
7. Loudspeaker announcements on monitor to say the Platform number the train will be arriving to load passengers
Current: When announcement is made regarding train arrival, it only states “Platform 2” and not Platform 1.
8. Open the two warming shelters on Platform 2 (South track) 5:00am to 8:00pm weekdays and weekends.
9. Divide the Geneva Station into two separate rooms Separate station and waiting room based on configurations at other Metra stations
East Room: waiting area with customer service office, restroom and benches (not accessible to West Room)
West Room: waiting area with benches (not accessible to East Room)
February/March
Alerted passengers arrival track uncertainty thus helping to reduce passengers ’track anxiety’
Confirmed to many passengers this is the line to Chicago
Educated many first time and/or infrequent passengers as to the track situation
Helped calm a young lady who was having a panic attack over which track the train was loading. I was able to calm her down and stayed with her until she got on the train.
Alerted waiting passengers on Platform 1 (who were not listening to announcements) to move to Platform 2 before the crossing gates go down
Alerted passengers waiting in their cars with their windows down and unable to hear the announcements to drive to the south parking lot for access to Platform 2
Directed late arriving passengers entering parking lot to drive to South Parking lot.
Alerted passengers when returning to Geneva to board the last 4 cars as these are the only cars that open in Geneva
Alerted several people that Metra tickets are required to be used within 3 hours of boarding the train
Helped passengers using the ticket machines
I’ll be out of state until mid April. When I return, I will resume observing weekday afternoon trains arriving between 1pm and 5pm.
Rusty
P.S. I attended the Metra Board of Directors meeting last week.
I didn’t realize the Metra's Chairperson lives in Kane County and has a law office both in Geneva and Chicago!
I would like to know if he takes Metra into the city.

Geneva Metra Train Station
Observations
The afternoon temperature hovered
around 50 degrees ... the first since last year.

SHELTERS CLOSED.Upon arriving at 1:10, I found the two south shelters (platform 2) were locked! A UP employee told me the shelters are scheduled to have a time-lock installed. The south parking lot still had their "closed" sign.

MONDAY FEB 24 TRAINS
All four afternoon trains (1:37, 2:37, 3:37, and 4:37 arrived on the north track (Platform 1).

New Term: TRACK ANXIETY
Several passengers have indicated that they have "track anxiety".

Enough passengers have experienced the confusion and know to listen to the announcements. However, there are many passengers who have not taken the train for months and are unaware of the situation.

WARMTH & BATHROOM FOR A DRINK?
If a passenger needs the above, the 3rd St Station has a sign suggesting that although they are not a warming station, however, for a purchase, they can get out of the cold (and presumably use the restroom).
Note: Their sign states their are warming stations on Platform 2; however, these are currently closed.

LA FOX TRACK ANXIETY
One lady from Mill Creek directed her husband to drive to Geneva although she is just minutes away from the La Fox station.
Apparently, "track anxiety" has spread to that station as she was tired of running between the platforms never knowing what inbound track the train would be arriving.

Last fall, I visited the La Fox station and I did not see any signage indicating that inbound to Chicago train could board on either platform 1
or platform 2.

Safety issue in Aurora Metra Station?
A young lady informed me she prefers the Geneva station over the Aurora station for safety reasons. She feels safer arriving at night and walking to the Geneva parking garage rather than walking to the Aurora parking lot.
Background
Since 1853 when the first commuter train left the Geneva station, inbound to Chicago passengers have all most always boarded on Platform 1 (North track). However, in the last 8 months, 25% to 40%of Chicago bound trains have arrived on Platform 2 (South Track). This is causing "TRACK ANXIETY".Scroll down for suggestions to reduce Track Anxiety"

OBSERVATIONS
GENEVA TRAIN STATION

SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW LETTER TO METRA
I frequently spend time around the Geneva Station on weekdays between 1:00 and 5:00.
These are my observations regarding
1. Dangerous conditions for Chicago bound passengers at the Geneva Station.
2. Be prepared to deal with winter and inclement conditions while waiting at Geneva Train Station.

Inbound Chicago Metra trains can arrive and load on the South track (Platform 2)
which usually is the Outbound to Elburn track.
This may be due to 3rd rail construction and freight traffic.
This seems to occur most often after 1:00pm.
Until mid December, passenger announcements pertaining to the track change happened infrequently causing passengers to cross tracks sometimes walking under downed gates.
I saw this happening on numerous occasions, including a passenger racing a freight train to get from Platform 1 to Platform 2 (and missing being run over by the freight train by 10 feet)
I again called Metra to alert them to this dangerous situation.
To their credit, Metra now makes regular announcements if the inbound to Chicago arrives and loads on the outbound track (platform 2).
Previously, announcements were sporadic or not at all with Chicago inbound trains arriving on Platform 2 either stopped or slowed down to let passengers on Platform 1 to cross the tracks to get to Platform 2.
This was problematic on occasions when freight trains were passing by the station at the same time.
I personally observed or were informed of over 50 people missing their trains.
Virtually all passenger wishing to ride into Chicago stands on Platform 1.
However, not everyone listens to announcements or sees the announcements on the monitor.
This is especially true to those who are waiting in their car or comes to the station "just in time" to catch their train.
Thus, passengers l can still be seen walking under gates to get from Platform 1 to Platform 2.

Re: Dealing with Winter and inclement conditions at the Geneva Train Station:
Shelters are open on both Platforms 1 and 2.
The Metra station is only open on weekdays between 5am and 1pm.
It is closed on weekends.
Notice: Metra Inbound to Chicago
may come in on the "Outbound"
(south) track.
South Shelters (Platform 2)
are now open (Jan 2025)

LETTER TO METRA ASKING FOR HELP
To: Metra Passenger Service Department

Contact: cell 224 449-1420 email GAstorybook@gmail.com
Re: Geneva Station
Chicago Bound Passengers
This message is to alert Metra to both a potential danger and a confusing situation for passengers boarding after 1pm on weekdays and/or all day on weekends.
Potential Dangers for Riders on Platform 1
Encountering Arctic Temperatures
Winter temperatures have been and are forecasted to be in the 20’s. These temperatures along with frequent southerly and/or southwesterly winds, exposes passengers standing on Platform 1 to dangerous temperatures.
The shelter on Platform 1 is rarely used due to the distance and location from the main boarding areas. The station closes for the day at 1:00 pm.
Riders find the shelters on Platform 2 to be problematic and thus are not used.
While waiting in the shelter or standing on Platform 2, upon hearing the announcement the Chicago bound train will be arriving on Platform 1, a rider must walk to 3rd Street, cross the tracks, possibly encountering active gates. Often enough freight trains pass the station at the same time as the commuter train is approaching or loading passenger.
Riders are walking around down gates. Those riders who do not walk around down gates, miss their train
On December 5, a rider, attempting to get from Platform 1 to Platform 2, was seen racing a freight train that was approaching the station. The freight engine missed hitting the rider by less than 10 feet!

Passenger Confusion While Waiting for
Chicago In Bound Train
Third track construction is resulting in Chicago bound trains to more frequently load passengers on Platform 2 (south platform).
Frequent and occasional riders are uncertain as to which platform Chicago bound trains will load passengers.

There have been no alerts on Metra’s webpage or signs at the station pertaining to this confusing situation.
Until mid December 2024, there were no regular announcements over the loudspeaker or on the platform monitor regarding this confusing situation.

As of mid December, after numerous calls to Metra, loudspeaker announcements and postings on the trackside monitors were initiated on a regular basis.

WISH LIST
1. Open the Geneva Station from 5am to 8pm
Current hours: 5am to 1pm
Note: When encountering inclement weather, there is no shelter for passengers. Furthermore, passengers have no protection from sun.
2. Post Station hours both on front and back doors to station
Current: No hours are posted on front and back (platform side) doors
3. Provide enclosed warming shelter on Platform 1 (North track) within
20 feet of Station
Current: Warming shelter on Platform is not enclosed and is located
1/2 block from the station and is seldom used.
4. Provide Commuter Alert signage: Inbound to Chicago trains
may come in on either track/platform.
Listen for announcement on track arrival provided 7 minutes before
scheduled arrival.
Current: There is no signage indicating trains may come in on either
track/ platform.
5. Provide signage facing private parking lot …passengers wait in these
cars for train but, in cold and inclement weather have their car windows

6. Signage on Platform 1 states “Platform 1”
Current: Signage on Platform 1 only indicates “to Chicago”; it does
not state “Platform 1”
7. Loudspeaker announcements on monitor to say the Platform number the
train will be arriving to load passengers
Current: When announcement is made regarding train arrival, it only
states “Platform 2” and not Platform 1.
8. Open the two warming shelters on Platform 2 (South track) 5:00am to
8:00pm weekdays and weekends.
9. Divide the Geneva Station into two separate rooms Separate station
and waiting room based on configurations at other Metra stations

Observations Dec 2024
Geneva Train Station
Announcements were not being made regarding arrival on outbound track
Observed a near fatal regent train - passenger accident
Wed Dec 5, I personally witness a passenger trying to get from Platform 1 to Platform2 by racing a freight train as it was coming int the station at the same time the commuter train was arriving.
The passenger went under the downed gates literally seconds before the freight train.
I called Metra.
With two weeks, I observed announcements over the loud speakers being made when trains were coming in for pickup on Platform 2 as well as announcement being posted on the station monitor.
Continuing concerns as many passenger, especially occasional passengers, upon arrival at the stay wait on platform 1 and are unaware that inbound trains often come in on the outbound platform 2 tracks.
Passengers, with headphone or waiting in cars in the parking lot, do not hear the announcements and cannot see the monitor or don’t look at the monitor.
Suggested actions
Call attention to a potential track change
Place appropriate signage on/near the two station doors as well as shelters
Provide easier access to information on App regarding track information
Continue to place platform info on WUP Alerts
Load passengers from Platform 2 on inbound trains after 1pm
Passenger will have shelter on Platform 2
Above observations from being press for 80% of inbound trains at at Geneva after 1pm and before 5pm
Posted October 2024
I have been observing these AFTERNOON inbound to Chicago 1:37, 2:37, 3:37, & 4:37 trains at the Geneva Station since July 2024
(except mid January through mid February)

In the fall of 2024, I started seeing more and more inbound trains arriving
on Platform 2
(South Track).

Passengers were not aware and announcements were not being made.

Inbound trains were slowing down and/or stopping on the South Track to allow passengers waiting on Platform 1
to cross over to Platform 2.

However, many passengers missed their trains!
