The first bridge over a navigable waterway spanned the Mississippi River between Rock Island, IL and Davenport, IA.


What makes this interesting is  Southerners Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis along with Abraham Lincoln were involved.  

These girls 'should be credited with civilizing the Wild West ... as they reportedly married about 5,000 cowboys and ranchers.   Thank restauranter Fred Harvey for recruiting these young girls which led to even more employment opportunities for women.
